Going Pro: Eric Gordon 1-on-1
He's a famous name in Indiana basketball but Eric Gordon rarely talks about his game and all the controversy that surrounded him in his first and only season as a Hoosier.
Gordon and his father sat down with 24-Hour News 8 for a candid conversation. He and his father talked about Eric's decision to go pro, Kelvin Sampson and whether I.U. was the right choice.
The exclusive interview was conducted at North Central High School, a place where he started his journey to the NBA.
Anthony Calhoun: What's been the reaction as you've decided to go to the NBA?
Eric Gordon: I would say everybody expected it and they knew I was going to have a pretty good season my Freshman year and the crazy thing is I am just leaving and they're just excited for me and I am also happy about it.
Eric Senior: I am extremely proud of him. I think he has been a very good citizen. What I hear most from people is that he is an outstanding basketball player but better yet, he is a better person.
Anthony Calhoun: "How much did it hurt you, personally, not to have the guy you really came to school for to play for, Kelvin Sampson, for the latter part of the season?"
Eric Gordon: "Well yea it hurt...dealing with all the Illinois stuff and just to choose him to play for Indiana...it took a lot out of me."
Anthony Calhoun: "Do you have any regrets though?"
Eric Gordon: "I don't have any regrets. Over all I thought we had a good season...it didn't happen the way we wanted to"
Anthony Calhoun: "To see what occurred with Kelvin Sampson and as a parent and how much time you invested in these different coaches, what was your reaction and how difficult was it for you to deal with it?
Eric Senior: "It was really difficult and at some point it was beyond belief. Because here it is we went through the transition of changing from Illinois to Indiana and all of sudden and we thought everything was going to work out even when these phone call came about. I could see in the guys' eyes and I could see that they kinda of lost some direction, a little purpose and I could see in my own son's eyes."
Eric Gordon: "Really during my recruiting he didn't call me at all...that's why..."
Anthony Calhoun: "You're telling me that Kelvin Sampson never called you at all during your recruiting time?"
Eric Gordon: "Not one time..."
Eric Senior: "That's kind of the unusual thing for us to see what happened and know that EJ was the crown jewel of his recruiting class and not had one inappropriate phone call....down in Bloomington that's really the only time I had communication with him...so I was really at a loss for that situation."
Anthony Calhoun: "Take us through that night at Illinois. What was that night like for you?"
Eric Gordon: "I don't know it was like. I was like the dead man walking... just walking into the arena."
